preview post

What do you get when you combine 1/4 of a sandwich with pickle slices, a guy who doesn't know my name, a foolish neighbor, a whole bunch of water, take out dinner, a spilled beer, and some friends?

If you guessed Wednesday, you're right.

Details to come... probably.

it makes you wonder...

*Towards the end of the work day yesterday, I used one of the bathrooms in my office, which is a single-user toilet room. I washed my hands, and used a paper towel to dry them. (This is all fascinating, right? Wait for it!!) As I tossed the towel into the wall-mounted waste receptacle, I noticed something out of place in the bin. I took a closer look, and saw a plastic disposable container from a salad bar, with the remains of a few pieces of lettuce and perhaps some lentils.

Um... huh?

The bathroom happens to be almost exactly next to the kitchen, which is equipped with cans for recycling plastic... and, if you're really not even into recycling, we all have our own trash cans at our desks... so I'm wondering about the circumstances that would lead someone to throw out a salad container in the bathroom... is one of my co-workers so sad and lonely that he/she eats lunch alone in the bathroom!?!?!

I'm not even sure I want to know...

(*Editor's Note: I mentioned this to a few people yesterday after it happened, so my apologies in the event you are reading this story twice-- think of it as an opportunity to dig deeper into the question. Let me know your thoughts on this matter in the comments section. I welcome your insight.)

time.

I've mentioned before, either here, or on my flickr page, that I look at this clock all the time.

bus + sky + clock + flag

In the past few weeks, I've had a lot on my mind and when I recently looked at this clock, it surprised me to see that the right face is missing its hands.

As if to tell me time is of the essence. To tell me something.

say my name!

I've come to the realization that people just aren't getting the fact that I've changed my last name. and it's kind of OK, i guess... as it makes sense to me to be called all 3 names. Seems fair.

I've been reading Sloane Crosley's new book, How Did You Get This Number-- she's also the author of I Was Told There'd Be Cake, which I found super funny. Anyway, this morning on the bus I was reading the short story called "If You Sprinkle", and found the following line on page 153:

As it is with anyone who has made an impact on your life, her first and last name are inseperable.

Of course, this got me thinking about the years and years of being referred to by my first and last name, and the fact that the majority of people in my life (sometimes even my husband!) seem to forget I now have another name tacked on the end... and of course I got a bit full of myself when reading this quote-- thinking that I must have had an impact on a lot of people's lives... :)

age is just a number

a lot of times i get carded at bars. worse, i often get mistaken for a student in my class rather than being the professor. today, though, the opposite happened, and i'm not sure how i feel about it.

i was in the kitchen at work getting a cup of coffee, talking about my weekend with a coworker. i mentioned that we travelled to a good friend's baby shower, and that she is having twins. the conversation went something like this.

coworker: you went to RISD, right?
me: yeah, for grad school
coworker: do you know so-and-so?
me: uh....
coworker: he's about our age. i'm figuring that you and i are about the same age... well, within 10 years.
me: uh...

yeah. so i happen to know that this coworker of mine has teenage children! i got all confused-- do i suddenly look old enough to have teenagers?

and for our next trick...

we got this 45 gallon trash can into the back of our Civic.
"perfect" fit
now all we have to do is figure out how to throw out the old trash can.

grapes and raisins.

red grapes.
green grapes.
white grapes.
yellow raisins.
[brown] raisins.

it's all in the name

so... i have to say i think i'd have a really hard time having a name that is also a word used in conversation. i'm being intentionally vague here... but let me try to explain the scenario. a co-worker of mine just referenced a group of people and used his own name in the description of the group. i wonder if he thought it was weird.

(in my head when i started to write this post, it was really good... and sadly it's not very good, but i wrote it anyway, so deal with it. or don't.)

paperclips

I realize I have a strange habit of paper clipping things together and then deciding I need more and more paperclips for, well, I don't know what. This is what ends up happening to the front of my notebook after I unearth the stray clips out of the bottom of my bag:

spatial relations

i pride myself on being able to select the best size plastic storage container for leftovers of all shapes and forms.

is this normal?

[posted per request of dan]

so i practice Bikram yoga... it's waaaay hot and humid in the room, and each class has the same set of 26 postures in the same order, each done 2x, regardless of where in the world you take the class. i am just getting over a nasty cold/bug/sinus thing, and i thought i would be ok to make it through the whole 90 minutes. i figured the heat would clear my sinuses.

well, i did ok. not great, and i suppose i could have done worse, but i wasn't too happy with how the first half of class went. i came home and told dan about this, and he suggested i should have left the room. i told him it's really frowned upon to leave the class, so i stuck it out, but i mentioned that tonight one girl did leave, for a little bit... as she walked towards the door, the teacher, who had a microphone on, asked her where she was going. she was close enough to the microphone that we could all hear her response-- "i have to go throw up". and... she left the studio. a few moments later, she came back and finished the class.

immediately after she left, the instructor announced that if anyone else needed to throw up, there was no need to leave the room-- feel free to use a trash bucked in the room-- the buckets otherwise designed for Kleenex, might i add.

so i implore you, readers, what is the strangest part about this story? leaving to puke and coming back to finish the class, or the suggestion that someone might puke in the studio classroom and keep going?

discuss.

how does one throw out a trash can? please provide replies in the comments.

08 March 2009

daylight

i realized something today.  the day in spring in which daylight savings time starts [today] is one of my favorite days of the year... sure, we lose an hour of sleep, but walking home from the coffee shop at 7:05 PM with a twilight haze is worth it.

02 February 2009

it's a different place

on friday, a bunch of people moved desks in my office... somehow on my half of the floor i am 1 of 2 people who did not move desks-- the result of this is the same outcome as if i had been the only person who moved (the other non-mover is not at his desk a lot)-- it's like i'm working in a different office! it's ok i guess... i just got a little sad though because people are discussing the superbowl squares pool that they all participated in... i was not invited. it's like i'm the new kid, but really, they are all the new kids!! i've been here!

happy monday, i guess.

eyebrows

there is a woman who i sometimes see on my bus... she has these really evil looking eyebrows. pointy. she always looks like she's scowling. i have never spoken to her but i imagine she's actually quite nice, yet people assume otherwise.

i'm trying to decide whether or not i could pull of wearing a knit beret.

12 January 2009

sometimes

sometimes something really cool happens... something you've been waiting for, and anticipating... and then somehow the pieces don't fall into place. that just happened to me. and... i'm feeling kind of strange-- as though i did something wrong. i'm a little sad... i will get over it.

06 January 2009

missing pen

this morning when i reached into the outer pocket of my bag to work on the metro sudoku puzzles, i realized that i have a compulsive habit of putting these pens in my bag and jacket pockets. i am then shocked to discover i no longer have any on my desk.

05 January 2009

january at the gym.

get ready people, it's new years resolution time and everyone has decided to go to the gym! tonight we arrived at our climbing gym around 7:45 PM to find the place packed to the brim-- many of the people there were new climbers, also, which... is annoying.  i'm sorry, i support people learning to climb, but too many new climbers just gets in the way.  people think they can climb harder stuff than they really can, and consequently get in my way.

i can't wait until february when most of them give up.  ooh, i'm mean....
