fried rice
i'm amazed at how much better chinese food tastes reheated than its original form. i'm eating some leftover fried rice that was so-so the other night, but MAN is it good now! how do they do that?

pops again
last night we went to the Boston Pops again-- this time the guest artist was Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls-- most excellent! i definitely recommend the "pops on the edge" series-- this is our 3rd year going (aimee mann, then ben folds, now this) and it is always great! the first half of the performance was just the Pops and they played 4 movements of Gustav Holst's "the planets" along with a big screen with pictures of planets... it was great. then after intermission, Amanda Palmer came out-- it was wild! it was truly a performance... costumes, guest singers and actors from throughout Symphony Hall... and the final encore song brought all the performers (and i think some regular audience members) up on stage to hold hands and sing. oh! and her new solo album is produced by Ben Folds, so she played and sang "Brick" as a tribute to him... which was great. many of the audience members were also all "dolled" up, which was fun to see. overall, it was an awesome time!

creative
this past weekend, my parents came to visit! we had a great time-- went to the ICA to see the Anish Kapoor exhibit, checked out the new Apple store, then dan's family came to have dinner, and after we all played apples to apples. when we got back from the restaurant, we saw that our neighbors were having a moving screening for their kids-- 3 families, 5 kids in total. i took a picture but without the flash so as not to disturb them. this was the first screening of the summer series apparently-- it looked awesome. this feature film was willa wonka and the chocolate factory (original edition).

pops
last night we went to the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall, which was great-- it was part of their Jazzfest series (which i believe consisted of last night and tonight only, so i'm not sure that really qualifies as a 'series'), and we got our tickets through the Michigan alumni club. It was annual "Big 10 Night at the Pops"-- we went 2 years ago, and failed to meet up with the group either time, but it was still fun. anyway i'm explaining where we got the tickets so i can explain our seats: second balcony center (cheap, but you can see clearly). on our way in, dan looks at the tickets and says "we're not sitting together"-- but i said, "well, i think maybe seat 18 and 20 ARE next to each other" and he tells me "not when they are in different rows"-- we had been given one seat in row A and one in row B! i think the most embarrassing part was showing the tickets to the usher, who mentioned he thought the seats were near each other... it all worked out well though, as another couple had the corresponding seats 17 and 21 in rows A and B, so apparently it was just a mix-up in the ticket distribution. and you'd think Big 10 alums could handle pairing up tickets!

misting fan
so this morning i got off the bus at the subway station, totally engrossed in my book, and on my way into the station, i got misted by water coming off of a fan! it was kind of surprising but quite nice, seeing as that it is very hot outside. has anyone else experienced these random acts of coolness?

farming update
our vegetables are only doing ok so far... i'm not sure they are getting enough sun. the yellow pepper especially looks like it needs some extra love... wish us luck! we have also added sugar snap peas to the mix.

my desk
i just realized about 5 minutes ago that my desk at work kind of screams my personality-- and i like that... but i feel a bit strange about it as well. it's not really like anyone else's desk, but i guess that's fine, since we're all different.
for the record, i'm more fun than they are (except for anna-- she still has remains from our lego design competition at her desk)

for reference, here is a picture of my desk. it is colorful-- filled with postcards and a gold painted barbie trophy.

cupcakes
what is the deal with cupcakes? they have made a big name for themselves in the dessert market lately, and it's surprising and exciting to me. today i had lunch with a former employer and i was really tempted to go and buy a cupcake after. really tempted. we also bought a cupcake for a friend the other night, and took it to a party... from a place called "kickass cupcakes" that sells-- you guessed it-- only cupcakes. i also recently saw "throwdown with bobby flay" on the food network in which the food was cupcakes.
i'm just wondering if anyone else has noticed that cupcakes are practically as popular as ipods, or if i am all alone here. ok that's probably an exaggeration, forgive me. cupcakes are practically as popular as pomegranate juice-- you gotta give me that one.
discuss.

farmers
yesterday we planted vegetables! our first garden! we are hoping to grow yellow tomatoes, yellow bell peppers, sweet basil, and cucumbers-- i hope the little box of soil on our deck works out. also, our wisteria tree is officially out of control-- it is taking over the neighbor's space. dan wants to wait to cut it back until it blossoms... but i am afraid he will be allergic to the scent. wish us luck!
